Thomaston’s Board of Finance tackled key issues at its December 10 meeting, including a proposal to hire an Economic Development Manager, unanticipated budget increases, and grant-funded infrastructure improvements.
A proposal to create a $60,000-per-year Economic Development Manager position sparked discussion. The role would oversee efforts to recruit and retain businesses while securing grants. Questions about its effectiveness included a discussion to consider a part-time alternative plan.
The board approved $12,500 for engineering costs tied to the Greenway trail extension, part of a $5.7 million regional grant initiative. Additionally, a LoCIP grant will fund much of the $385,000 Elm Street reconstruction project, with costs partially borne by the town.
Budget reallocations addressed pressing needs, including $55,515 for police salaries and $12,000 for streetlight replacements. Rising legal costs due to FOI complaints were also discussed.
