Moms Place to Bring Creative Spark to Thomaston’s Main Street

Thomaston residents have a new reason to celebrate as Moms Place, a woman-owned business rooted in creativity and community, prepares to open its doors on February 1st, though this date may be adjusted as final renovations are completed. The new store will be located at 79 Main Street, previously occupied by D.M. Barberet Jewelers, which closed in December 2023 following the retirement of its owner, David Barberet.

Founded by Cathy Gaylord and her mother, Charlotte Apicella, this vibrant store will offer a mix of ceramics, crafts, and handmade treasures, with a mission to inspire and connect people through the joy of making.

Moms Place is more than just a store—it’s a labor of love with a story that spans decades. In 1985, Cathy’s father, Nicholas Apicella, transformed their family home into a studio where Charlotte could teach ceramics. Unfortunately, Charlotte had to close the studio but her love for ceramics never faded.

Cathy explained the history of their new business.  “In May 2019, we lost my father, a Vietnam Veteran, to health issues stemming from Agent Orange. After a year of reflection, Charlotte and I chose to unite our talents and reignite our work in the studio.” For over four years, Cathy and Charlotte traveled around the country participating in shows and events. Cathy added, “Our revitalized classes sparked an overwhelming wave of support from the community, inspiring us to reopen our studio.”

The heartwarming story behind Moms Place is complemented by their impressive array of services and offerings. While ceramics remain at the core, the store will also feature classes in sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and other crafts. “Open Paint” will invite visitors to unleash their creativity at their own pace. Shoppers will also discover finished and bisque ceramics, vibrant resin creations, crochet and knit items, beautiful quilts, and even customized heat-pressed apparel.

Cathy and Charlotte’s dedication to supporting local artisans is evident in their plans to collaborate with a diverse array of creative talent. “We believe in the beauty of handmade and unique items, making every purchase feel like discovering a true treasure,” Cathy told us.

The Thomaston community has already played a significant role in bringing this vision to life. Cathy expressed gratitude to Thomaston Savings Bank and other members of the community for their support. As the opening day approaches, anticipation is building for a space that promises to be a haven for creativity, connection, and inspiration. Moms Place is set to become a cornerstone of Thomaston’s Main Street—a place where stories are shared, skills are learned, and beautiful creations come to life.
