Thomaston residents voted to approve $846,000 for the construction and reconfiguration of the parking area adjacent to Reeves Field at a town meeting on Wednesday, February 19th. The project will include paving and lining of parking spaces, the installation of a stormwater management feature, energy-efficient lighting, a pedestrian walkway, landscaping, and the construction of a pickleball court.
The approval allows the town to apply for a $676,800 grant, which would cover 80% percent of the cost. Thomaston will contribute the remaining $169,200. The measure passed with 26 votes in favor and one opposed.
Among the topics raised during the meeting was the need for security measures in the area, which has been subject to vandalism in the past. First Selectman Ed Mone acknowledged the concern and said the installation of surveillance cameras are included in the project. Questions were also raised about noise levels and lighting.
The addition of a pickleball court reflects a growing interest in the sport among Thomaston residents. Several pickleball players were in attendance, showing strong community support for the new facility.
