As the federal government shutdown continues, the Connecticut Department of Social Services (DSS) has announced that SNAP (formerly known as the food stamp program) benefits for November will not be paid unless the shutdown ends before November 1. SNAP benefits are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and if the federal government remains closed, Connecticut may not receive the money needed to issue monthly benefits.
For Thomaston residents who may need support, the Thomaston Food Pantry is available. The pantry will hold its next curbside distribution on Wednesday, November 12, from 5–6 p.m., and Saturday, November 15, from 9–10 a.m. The pantry accepts donations in the bin outside the Police Station. For information on current needs and volunteer opportunities, residents can call (860) 880-2426 or email ThomastonCommunityPantry@gmail.com.
If you are looking to help, members of the community can also participate in upcoming food drives. On Friday, November 7, Nourished Roots Yoga will host a donation-based yoga class at 34 Main Street from 7–8 p.m. Participants are invited to bring canned or boxed food items for the Thomaston and Plymouth food pantries. Those who bring three or more items will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a $50 gift card donated by Clocktown Brewing Company. The class is free, but registration is required.
The Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department will also hold its annual Food and Toy Drive the following week on Saturday, November 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire station, 245 South Main Street. Donations of non-perishable food items and new, unwrapped toys will help local families in need during the holiday season.
As uncertainty continues at the federal level, local organizations and volunteers are preparing to meet an increase in demand. If you’re aware of other local food drives or opportunities to help, please email the Clocktown Chronicle at contact@clocktownchronicle.com so this article can be updated with the most current information available.
