District demographic study complete; residents invited to Nov. 13 workshop

Thomaston’s ongoing study of school buildings and long-term education options is moving into its next stage. The project team will hold a second community meeting on Thursday, November 13th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Thomaston High School cafeteria, where residents can review possible options for the future of the district and share feedback.

The study, led by Drummey Rosane Anderson, Inc. (DRA), has been gathering data on school enrollment, building conditions, and the priorities of the Thomaston community. A new demographic analysis prepared by CropperGIS shows that enrollment in Thomaston Public Schools is expected to continue declining over the next decade, dropping by about 18%, or 140 students by 2036. The report attributes this trend to smaller family sizes and fewer school-aged children in town.

The first community workshop, held October 23rd, brought together about 30 residents at the high school library. Participants joined small-group discussions organized around three perspectives—facilities, education, and finance. Attendees noted that the town’s school buildings are aging and no longer meet current code or accessibility standards, while others emphasized preserving Thomaston’s close-knit identity as any long-term options are considered.

The upcoming workshop will build on those conversations and begin outlining possible options and alternatives. A third and final workshop focused on recommendations is scheduled for December 4th, also at Thomaston High School.

Residents are encouraged to attend Thursday’s session to learn more and share their input before decisions are made about the district’s next steps.
