Overnight Fire Devastates Downtown Businesses; Community Rallies

A devastating fire that began around 10 p.m. Tuesday caused massive damage to several downtown businesses in Thomaston, leaving a familiar stretch of Main Street deeply changed by morning.

Fire crews responded late Tuesday evening as they worked to contain the fire, which spread within a shared building and impacted multiple businesses, including Patti’s Place, U. S. Graphics, American Nails, Mom’s Place, and Chatham Beach Salon.

The response unfolded under difficult winter conditions, with extreme cold creating challenges throughout the night. Several agencies assisted at the scene as nearby roads were closed for safety.

As the scene evolved, community members gathered nearby — some watching quietly through the night, others checking in with neighbors or looking for ways to help. Julia Langeway, who lives nearby, said she observed the response for several hours.

“We spectated from about 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. It was really an incredible mutual aid effort by Thomaston and the surrounding towns’ firefighters. We were impressed to see how the community came together to try and save our most familiar businesses. It was very emotional to look out my window today and see the excavators tearing apart the buildings — but Thomaston is the strongest community I’ve ever lived in, so I know we will be able to support each other and the business owners.”

In a statement provided to the Chronicle, First Selectman Rich Sileo reflected on the loss to the community and the efforts of those who responded overnight.

“Firstly, I would like to thank our amazing first responders, including our Public Works crew and those first responders from the surrounding towns that have been working all night to put the fire out and secure the site.
Thankfully, no one was injured.
There are no words to describe the feelings of sadness and loss that we are all feeling. We lost several businesses that make up the fabric of Thomaston and help to define Thomaston’s downtown. However, there is one that is the singular icon for our town and that’s Patti’s Place. This pain will take time to pass. Please send your prayers to Patti and Mike.”

Sileo also added that residents should expect to smell smoke in the area for some time.

Members of the Thomaston community have quickly begun finding ways to support the affected businesses and the first responders who worked through the night. Area businesses and residents alike have stepped forward, offering help in whatever ways they can. The Chronicle is working to confirm support efforts and will share verified information as soon as possible.

This article will be updated as additional information becomes available.
