Enhancing Accessibility at Thomaston Opera House

The Thomaston Opera House, a historic landmark in Connecticut, is undergoing a significant restoration and renovation project as it marks its 140th anniversary. This initiative is a collaborative effort among several organizations, including the Thomaston Opera House Commission, Landmark Community Theatre, Friends of the Thomaston Opera House, the Thomaston Opera House Restoration Committee, and the Thomaston Opera House Building Committee.

The comprehensive project focuses on three main components:

  1. Restoration of Original Artwork: This involves refurbishing the Opera House’s Romanesque ceiling and other original artistic elements to preserve its historical integrity.
  2. Accessibility Enhancements: A new stage-accessible elevator will be installed to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges, ensuring inclusive access to performances.
  3. Energy Efficiency Improvements: Upgrades to windows and the heating/cooling systems aim to enhance the building’s energy efficiency, aligning with modern environmental standards.

The total estimated cost for the project is $8.1 million. The first phase, budgeted at $4.5 million, has already secured $3.5 million in funding from the State of Connecticut. Additionally, the Town of Thomaston funded a $1.4 million roof replacement, marking a significant step in the restoration efforts.

Local support has been robust. The Thomaston Savings Bank Foundation contributed $150,000 to the Friends of the Thomaston Opera House to assist with the renovation. Stephen L. Lewis, President & CEO of Thomaston Savings Bank, emphasized the project’s potential to enrich the community and stimulate economic development through tourism and cultural experiences.

The restoration is expected to have a positive economic impact on the community by creating employment opportunities, boosting tourism, and revitalizing the downtown area. The Opera House plans to increase its annual performances from 54 to at least 78.

Built in 1884, the Thomaston Opera House has long served as a cultural and recreational center for Thomaston and surrounding communities. Operated by Landmark Community Theatre, the venue is dedicated to providing high-quality theatrical productions and educational opportunities in the performing arts. Its mission includes preserving the Opera House as a historic landmark and community space, fostering inclusivity, and enriching the cultural fabric of the region.

As the restoration project progresses, the Thomaston Opera House aims to continue its legacy as a beacon of arts and culture, ensuring that it remains a vibrant hub for community engagement and artistic expression for future generations.
