A recent discussion on our local Facebook page, Thomaston People Speaks, raised concerns about the future of bus transportation for Thomaston students attending Waterbury magnet schools. Among the comments, community members expressed concerns about the potential discontinuation of this transportation service.
Initial commentary suggested that Thomaston students would no longer have bus access to Waterbury magnet schools, but members of our town’s elected boards quickly responded.
To clarify the situation, Board of Finance (BOF) member Adam Silverman stated that during a recent meeting, Superintendent of Schools Francine Coss explained that busing for Thomaston students attending these magnet schools will be provided directly by the city of Waterbury. This discussion is documented in the BOF’s meeting minutes from Tuesday, February 11.
Further verification came from Beth Campbell, a member of the Board of Education, who reinforced this by stating that Waterbury will receive the grant funding and handle student transportation.
While the immediate concern was the status of busing, a broader issue emerged as some community members questioned why Thomaston families are choosing to send their children to schools outside the district. Some voiced concerns about the quality of education and support available in Thomaston, indicating that the decision to enroll in out-of-district schools is driven by more than just transportation.
As this situation evolves, we will continue to monitor and report on any further developments. If additional clarification is provided by school or town officials, Clocktown Chronicle will update this article.
