Olsen spent 25 years teaching at Thomaston High School, where he also coached for more than three decades. Before his teaching career, he worked as a structural engineer in the aerospace industry for 16 years, most recently with Sikorsky.

Olsen earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue University, as well as a master’s degree in education from the University of Hartford.

A Thomaston resident since 1989, Olsen has lived in town for 36 years with his wife, Joyce. Their five adult children all attended Thomaston schools.
