When Greens N’ Things launched in 2022, it wasn’t the result of a sudden trend or a polished corporate rollout. It was the outcome of years spent in kitchens, a personal turning point, and a practical need to build something that worked for real life.
At the center of the business is founder and chef Sara Roberts, whose relationship with food began early. She entered the culinary world at just 16 years old, working as a cook at Sky Top Lanes in Torrington. That first job set the tone for what would become a lifelong career in the industry.

After high school, Roberts explored other paths while attending college, but food service remained a constant. “I wanted to be a cop, FBI agent, or something badass like that, but God had other plans for me,” she said.
Throughout her college years, she continued working in hospitality, trying both front-of-house and kitchen roles. It quickly became clear where she belonged.
“I was really bad at being a server, forgetting tables, dropping food, breaking glass, but excelled in the kitchen, and have always enjoyed working with food,” Roberts said.
She went on to earn both a culinary degree and a hospitality management degree while continuing to build hands-on experience. Over time, what started as a job became a calling.
Greens N’ Things was born not just from professional experience, but from a personal place as well. Roberts says the idea took shape at the end of a personal healing journey, during a period when she was navigating life as a new mom in a post-COVID world. Finding a chef role that could accommodate her schedule was increasingly difficult, so she began building a business model that could support both her career and her family.
“My son was the inspiration to launching a meal delivery service, where I could prepare meals during the day, and deliveries scheduled in the evening, and I could have my son with me,” she said. In 2022, with just enough money saved, she decided to move forward. “It was a now or never situation.”
Today, Greens N’ Things operates out of a storefront at 310 South Main Street in Thomaston, offering both meal pickup and local delivery. Roberts describes the business simply and clearly.
The meals are designed for people trying to eat better, those who do not like to or cannot cook, or anyone looking to save time during the week. Customers can pick up orders at the Thomaston location or have meals delivered throughout the greater Thomaston area and surrounding towns.
Roberts keeps the operation intentionally small and hands-on. She uses whole, fresh foods when possible and avoids added preservatives, focusing on scratch-made recipes and thoughtful portions.
“I pride my business on fresh, quality, scratch made recipes,” she said. “I am mindful of the portions of each meal, ensuring there are at least 35 grams of protein in every meal.”
Looking ahead, Greens N’ Things is continuing to grow carefully. Roberts plans to launch a business and private event catering sector this year, serving events of up to 75 people.
Thomaston, she said, was a practical choice for the business. The rent was affordable, the space already included a hood and exhaust system, and the location near the highway made it easier to expand the delivery radius into other parts of Connecticut.
For now, Greens N’ Things remains largely a one-person operation. “Right now, we’re a one woman show with a little bit of help,” Roberts said.
Despite the challenges of running a small business, she says the relationships built along the way have been deeply meaningful. “My business is an answered prayer,” she said. “My customers quickly grow to become like family, are very important to me. Their continued support contributes to my family and their futures.”
Roberts hopes the community will continue to support Greens N’ Things by spreading the word, engaging on social media, and trying a few meals. She is also interested in finding ways to give back, and welcomes local organizations in town to reach out.
