Landmark Community Theatre’s (LCT) upcoming production, Puffs, will open this weekend at the Thomaston Opera House, bringing a fast-paced comedy that shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked characters of a familiar wizarding world.
Puffs follows Wayne Hopkins and his fellow students in the house known for loyalty rather than heroics. While the story unfolds alongside the events of a much more famous seven-year saga, the focus remains on the “side characters” — those navigating magic school without prophecies or legendary destinies. The result is a show that blends comedy with a heartfelt message about identity, belonging, and finding meaning in ordinary moments.
We had an opportunity to connect with director Shanelle Dupre, who said audiences don’t need deep knowledge of the wizarding world to enjoy the show. She described Puffs as “a fast-paced, high-energy comedy that works on multiple levels,” noting that longtime fans will catch plenty of references, while newcomers can still fully enjoy the story. “It is a story full of heart, humor, and delightful chaos”, Dupre said.
Dupre also noted that the production is intended for older audiences. The show contains some adult language, and parental discretion is advised for those under 13. Strobe lighting and theatrical haze will also be used during the performance.
When asked what she has enjoyed most about directing the production, Dupre pointed to the cast, which includes longtime LCT performers alongside actors new to the theatre. She said it has been especially rewarding to watch the cast bring both recognizable characters and entirely new ones to life, making each role their own.
Behind the scenes, the show is just as busy as it appears onstage. With 14 actors playing 47 characters, Puffs relies on quick costume changes, numerous sound and music cues, and a wide range of props, many of which were handmade for this production. The pace and coordination required backstage, Dupre said, help make the onstage chaos look effortless.
Puffs will run over three weekends, with evening performances on February 21, 27, 28, and March 6 and 7 at 8 p.m., and Sunday matinees on February 22, March 1, and March 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available through the theatre’s website, and patrons with questions are encouraged to contact the box office at 860-283-6250.
Looking ahead, Puffs is one of several productions planned for 2026 by Landmark Community Theatre, including Pretty Woman in the spring, Anastasia over the summer, Ragtime in the fall, and Santa Switch during the holiday season.
