Beyond the Call: How Donations Support Thomaston Firefighters

When the call came in around 10 p.m. for the recent three-alarm fire downtown, Thomaston firefighters headed out into below-zero temperatures for what became a 14-hour overnight response. Crews worked through the night to contain the blaze as pumps, hydrants and gear froze in the subzero conditions. By the time daylight returned, many had been on scene since the initial dispatch.

For many residents, the fire served as a reminder that Thomaston’s fire protection is provided entirely by volunteers. Organized in 1881, the Thomaston Fire Department remains 100% volunteer-operated. Members meet weekly to train and respond to emergencies at all hours. While the town budget covers the department’s operating expenses, department leadership says many other aspects of the organization rely on donations raised through the annual appeal and community fundraising events.

Assistant Chief Matt Pronovost explained that town funding supports the department’s core needs, including fire apparatus, major equipment, personal protective equipment, tools, maintenance of the building and equipment, and training expenses.

Everything beyond that is funded through donations and events such as the department carnival and monthly breakfasts. Contributions support uniforms, kitchen equipment, furniture in the hall and day room, fire prevention initiatives such as school visits and the department’s annual open house, and civic sponsorships including local youth organizations. The department also maintains a “Sunshine Fund” to assist members who may face hardship due to illness or injury related to fire department activities. Although volunteers are covered by workers’ compensation, Pronovost said the volunteer structure can leave gaps that the department works to help address when needed.

Donations also support charitable contributions to burn treatment centers and the Connecticut Fallen Firefighters Memorial, along with the educational materials distributed during Fire Prevention Month and other outreach efforts.

Pronovost acknowledged that many residents are managing financial pressures of their own and said any level of support is appreciated. In the days following the fire, the department received food, donations and handwritten notes from local students. Many of those messages now hang inside the station.

Residents who wish to contribute to the department’s annual appeal may send donations to 245 South Main Street, Thomaston, CT 06787.
