The 1990 movie “Pretty Woman” that starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere quickly became a screen classic and fan favorite that has welcomed repeated viewings and created a lasting and unique vocabulary.

The movie became “Pretty Woman: The Musical” when it hit the Broadway stage in 2018. Now, following a series of national and international tours, it is headed to Landmark Community Theatre (LCT) in Thomaston, which will be one of the first community theaters in New England to secure the performance rights.

“And we’re really excited about it,” says Jeff Dunn, Executive Director of LCT. He’s definitely not alone.

“I love the Cinderella story,” says director Kate Kovacs, who during the day is an IT executive and has eagerly embraced overseeing this production. “It has so much charm and humor,” she says. “There’s a lot of energy here, and we have such a wonderful cast… they bring so much to it.” “And really, doing this show is my creative break, and I welcome that,” she adds.

The movie — and the musical — are all about the relationship between Vivian, a free-spirited Hollywood escort, and Edward, a wealthy businessman who hires her to be his date for a week. That week unexpectedly and forever changes their relationship and brings the audience to a happy ending.

Following Roberts and Gere in such classic roles is a challenge that both of the lead actors at Landmark acknowledge is both formidable yet eagerly welcomed.

“Of course people know those actors, but I love the opportunity to show my character in this part,” says CJ Calzone, who portrays Vivian in the musical.

Calzone is an experienced actor who is coming to Landmark for the first time since having a baby nine months ago. “I’m blessed with a wonderful husband to help me, and working with all of the great people in this show,” she adds.

Gianni Perugini, who takes the role of Edward, is another busy actor at Landmark, having appeared most recently in the Christmas production of “Miracle on 34th Street.” He also stays busy in other shows; in his full-time job as principal of Watertown High School, he finds himself cast in every school production at least in cameo roles.

“I love it all. It’s fun, it’s very creative,” he says. “And playing Edward is definitely fun, the acting and the vocals all come together … The cast is wonderful, and CJ and I are having a great time.”

The original music score in this show by Grammy winner Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance covers a lot of ground, from ‘80s rock to operatic arias. That opens a lot of vocal space for Kovacs’ cast and the band which accompanies them, ensuring a lively evening for theater-goers. Fiona Mary is the musical director for this staging with choreography by Matthew Guerrera.

“Pretty Woman” opens at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 18 and continues with evening performances April 24-25 and May 1-2, with Sunday 2 p.m. matinees April 19 and 26 and May 3. For tickets, readers can call the box office at (860) 283-6250 or purchase online.
